Chapter 9

Alana’s stomach flipped when she heard the door open and shut. Thade had left, presumably to search for a woman willing to become his mate. Why did she feel so jealous? She’d told him to go and she had no business getting mad about it.

A glance at each of the children showed they shared her mood. None of them looked happy. Guilt settled on her shoulders. Was she giving them false hope if she continued showing up to babysit them every day? Maybe she should arrange for another babysitter to fill in for her. But when Yulna snuggled close to her on the couch as Xerrn, Flatt, and Krezz excitedly worked on the unfinished puzzle from yesterday that was still on the coffee table, she couldn’t bring herself to cancel the next five days.

Her skin still tingled in all the places Thade had touched her, especially her shoulders and forearms, when he’d held onto her and looked her up and down, as if checking to make sure she wasn’t hurt.

“I vow to always protect you, Alana.”

His words echoed in her mind, bringing her comfort and also making her a bit sad. Because she wanted more than anything to feel safe and build the life she’d always dreamed of as a child. The life her parents had promised her was possible. Optimistic as ever, both her mother and father had always talked as if one day, likely in Alana’s lifetime, Earth would become the great planet it had once been. A safe, unspoiled land of opportunity.

Yet with each new war, each new environmental disaster, and each new plague she couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps her parents had been wrong. Would they really wish for her to remain on Earth if there was truly nothing left for her? The streets of New York City were increasingly unsafe, even during the daylight hours, but she didn’t know where else in the country she might relocate. Unemployment rates were sky high—not just in the United States, but all over the world. Even if she tried to move somewhere supposedly safer, she might not manage to find a job and very well might end up homeless.

The picturesque images of New Vaxx she’d seen on the Vaxxlian Alien Mail Order Bride website yesterday flashed in her mind. Thade’s planet looked like an absolute paradise. The settlement of Starzzia was beautiful, too. The houses, all constructed of large white stones, were built in between tall green trees and other plant life. She’d never seen so much greenery before, in person, at least. What a wonder it would be to practically live in the wilderness of an alien planet.

There’s a school in Starzzia.

She recalled the testimonial that had mentioned the school. If she mated with a Vaxxlian and left Earth, would she be able to secure a teaching job on New Vaxx? The whole thing seemed too easy, too good to be true. After three years spent trying and failing to find a teaching job, she felt as if there must be a catch of some sort.
